Van Eijl previously wrote her dissertation on women and labour until 1940: Het werkzame verschil. Vrouwen in de slag om arbeid, 1898-1940, Hilversum: Verloren, 1994.

The interviews were conducted as part of the study Women and Labor in Dutch Trade Union History (working title), which Van Eijl is conducting for the IISH and which is to lead to a publication. The research covers the period from the 1950s onward. Corrie van Eyl and Marian van der Klein were the interviewers.

The interviewed women speak about (their experiences with) women’s work in the FNV (and/or its precursors) from a position they hold or have held within the trade union federation. This may involve the Women’s Union or the Women’s Secretariat of the FNV or one of the trade unions. The interview with Jenny Zwanepol was not conducted by Corrie van Eijl but by Marian van der Klein.

Historian Corrie van Eijl also researched the history of working women between 1850 and 1950. A radio broadcast of about an hour was made about this by the NTR. It is available on the Sound and Vision website.
