The interviews focus on events and experiences in the years after 1940. They primarily discuss Indonesia and the Netherlands. Themes include personal background in Indonesia and the Netherlands, anti-Chinese violence and living environment, consequences and/or traumas of G30S (the coup d’etat), student days, migration.
The Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center (CIHC) was founded in 2011 with the goal of preserving the cultural heritage of Indonesian Chinese in the Netherlands and recording and promoting knowledge of their (migration) history. Since 2016, the CIHC has been an independent foundation. In 2012, the first Oral History project was launched in collaboration with the KITLV. After its completion, a follow-up project was launched in September 2022. The project has
a duration of three years. The aim is to conduct at least thirty interviews. Whereas the first project interviewed as many 1st-generation elders as possible, the age group is now being broadened and the themes broadened. Main questions vary. Some participants are interviewed
about a particular part of their lives. Others are asked about their entire life story.
