When I Close My Eyes: Living with the Japanese Camps

Using homemade drawings, women who survived Japanese internment camps during World War II recount their experiences in the documentary When I Close My Eyes.

Between 1942 and 1945, thousands of women and children perished in Japanese internment camps in Indonesia. Little footage of the camps exists, except for drawings created by the women and children. The suppressed stories of these women and children are brought to light in this documentary. “I actually enjoy telling about it, because I couldn’t do it then; I like doing it now,” a witness says in the film.

The film will be shown in various theaters across the Netherlands starting March 28, 2024. For more information, contact Pieter van Huystee Film and TV.
