Universiteit Leiden: Oral History

Description

Every contemporary historian has to deal with it: information that is nowhere in writing, but is stored in the memories of those involved. In this lecture, you will learn to dig up that information by conducting interviews. How do you approach someone you want to interview? What questions do you ask? How do you record a conversation? How do you know if a memory is reliable? And how do you analyze and process the interview material? To put into practice the theoretical knowledge gained, each student goes out independently to capture the voice of the past. In doing so, students are encouraged to include historical footage in the interviews as well.

The interviews will be conducted around a theme, which will be announced at the beginning of the course.

This auxiliary course is associated with the Social History, Dutch History and General History majors.
