If the respondent is on the left, he/she should not look to the left (out of focus). Adjust your position as interviewer so that the respondent is looking at you (i.e. not directly into the camera).
Make sure there is enough light (preferably during the day). Make sure the light falls on the face. Do not film in backlight.
Switch the microphone on (the light turns green).
Run test recording

The Media Suite is a research environment of the Dutch infrastructure for digital humanities and social sciences (CLARIAH). It facilitates academic research with large Dutch media collections by providing advanced search and analysis tools.
The CLARIAH Media Suite is an application for doing research with data collections. It is intended exclusively for use by scholars and students at universities and higher education institutions (e.g. film, television, and other media scholars, oral historians, and political historians). They can log in to the Media Suite with their university credentials.
But others may also find the Media Suite useful, such as staff of institutes that offer data collections. They get access rights to their own collections. Or citizen scientists who may be interested in the open access collections that are available.
As well as being used as a transcription tool, ELAN is suitable as a more general linguistic annotation tool. These annotations can be anything the user wants: they can be codes, key moments, memos, but also transcriptions.
It also enables multi-layer transcription. In ELAN you can create so-called ‘tiers’ for different speakers.

In modern video conferencing software such as ZOOM, it is fairly easy to change the audio setting in such a way that you can record each speaker (as long as they participate via their own network) on a separate channel. If you then want to perform speech recognition, you do have to do that for each speaker separately, but the advantage is that you then get perfect channel separation.

Subtitle Edit is not primarily intended as a transcription programme, but to create subtitles for video files. However, it is a simple way to produce transcriptions with time codes.

Aegisub is a free, cross-platform open source tool for creating and modifying subtitles.
Aegisub makes it quick and easy to time subtitles on audio, including a built-in real-time video preview.
The program does not appear to be intended for playing video and audio at the same time. It is warned that it is not a media player.
So it might be better to transcribe with audio.
You can play the relevant track with subtitles and picture separately.
When you are done, you should save the subtitle file as an srt file.
Not with “save as” but with export and then choose SubRip (*. srt)
Easy transcribing with the web version of oTranscribe
Disadvantage is that there are no automatic time codes added to the transcription.
oTranscribe is a simple, lightweight website that simplifies the process of manual transcription. It combines a straightforward Google Docs-like text editor with a simple media player that uses hotkeys for play/pause/forward/reverse. You can load your own audio and video files, or use a video from YouTube.
The online tool does not store data on their own servers, but uses your own browser storage. This is good for privacy, but bad for reliability: back up your transcription about every 10 minutes.

Listen N Write Free is a file playback program, but it has some useful features that make it easy to keep on typing and to get a finished version faster. If the sound recording is going too fast, you can click the pause button and when you resume, the recording will automatically rewind a few seconds.
A button allows you to manually add time codes at various points in the text.
